In this video, by Damir Skaljic, the ice on the lake cracks loudly as shards scatter in the water. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, about a third of the lake was covered in ice on February 22, as temperatures above freezing were forecast for the week. The Chicago Fire Department has warned residents to stay off the ice near the shore due to “dangerous conditions.” “You may be on ice and not know it due to snow cover,” the department said.
