Arriving on Netflix later this week is the Hindi-language drama Guilty. The film was written by a trio of writers, Atika Chohan, Kanika Dhillon, and Ruchi Narrain. Guilty will become the thirteenth Hindi Original film from Netflix, and third of 2020 already. The film is set to explore themes such as sexual consent, victim-blaming, and rape, so expect it to be on the most controversial Hindi films we’ve seen yet.

New Upcoming Film Guilty 2020 Story

Netflix India film Guilty dives headlong into the #MeToo phenomenon with a story about sexual assault on a college campus. It hopes to inspire discussion and contempt for the way society addresses and handles the problem — its final title card is a doozy of a finger pointed at social and institutional injustice. The film has a lot to say, but as ever, its effectiveness hinges on how the message is delivered.

Here is the story of the new upcoming film Guilty.

This story is told mostly in flashback, as a lawyer, Danish (Taher Shabbir), questions witnesses — friends, bandmates, passersby. Also, Nanki, who finds herself torn between her boyfriend, who insists the sex was consensual and a drunken mistake, and his accuser, who uses social media to stir up a movement of #MeToo supporters and inspire news headlines. We soon learn that Danish is VJ’s attorney, the product of his family’s wealth and influence. We also learn that Tanu is on scholarship, and the product of a less privileged social class, so she’s ripe for gaslighting. It’s a volatile situation ready to explode. It’s also a dense, murky swamp, and Danish and Nanki have no choice but to slog through it.

Nanki is mostly loyal to VJ, but she’s still haunted by uncertainty, so she plays amateur sleuth and starts poking around, possibly putting her hopes for a Rhodes scholarship at risk. She also experiences intense anxiety attacks, for which she takes medication. Meanwhile, Danish wavers between his loyalty to the truth and the person who’s paying him.

New Upcoming Film Guilty 2020 Reviews and Ratings

Here is all you need to know about the new upcoming film Guilty 2020 cast, reviews, youtube trailer, and the Netflix release date.

The film begins with the perspective of the lawyers fighting the case for VJ and his powerful parents, as they interview the college students and band members present at the scene of the incident. Through this, we are taken into flashbacks that fit in the missing pieces of this puzzle — who is friends with whom, who has the motive to lie, what kind of classism and sexism is at play here, and what’s the college vibe like.

But as you sink deeper into the narrative of Guilty, you realize writers Ruchi Narain and Kanika Dhillon almost want to manipulate you into judging characters and believing you know the outcome of the story, only to squash it as you reach the dramatic climax.

Nonetheless, Guilty is an interesting watch, and props to Dharmatic for putting together a nuanced film helmed mostly by women. I guess we should be thankful that we finally have a Bollywood film on the #MeToo movement that’s not Section 375.
