Security law: Hong Kong police arrest another CUHK student over peaceful pro-democracy campus demo last Nov | Hong Kong Free Press HKFP

Police have arrested another student under the national security law over a pro-democracy demonstration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) last November. The 19-year-old is accused of taking part in an unauthorised assembly and of a national security offence, “incitement to secession.”

The suspect was arrested on Thursday and has been released on bail. He must report to police in mid-May, police told HKFP on Friday.

Last November, around 100 graduating students held a pro-democracy rally on the CUHK campus after authorities cancelled the official graduation ceremony, citing coronavirus restrictions on social gatherings.

Some shouted and displayed flags bearing slogans such as “Hong Kong Independence, the only way out” and the banned “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times” slogan. The protesters also sang Glory to Hong Kong, the anthem of the 2019 anti-extradition bill demonstrations.

Police arrested eight in early December over the incident, three of them under the security law over the display and shouting of the banned slogans. The group were released on bail and are due to report back police in early March.

The male detained on Thursday is the ninth person to be arrested over the demonstration and the 99th person – 82 males and 17 females between the ages of 16 to 79 – to be detained under the security law imposed by Beijing last June 30.
