Software: Introduction to Software and Types of Software

The terms software and hardware are frequently used in the context of computers. Here in this post, we will give information about software and its types. Introduction to Software: The term software refers to the set of computer programs, procedures, and associated documents such as flow charts, manuals, etc. The software can be referred to as a collection of programs whose objective is to enhance the capability of the hardware machines.

Software or the programs can be defined as the complete set of written instructions written by the programmer which enables the computer to obtain the solution of a problem with or without the data. Software is a general term that is used to describe any single program or group of programs. It includes such things as operating procedures and documentation that is any printed reference manual required by the operator to use the computer system effectively.

Thus a user manual that describes the syntax of a particular language is known as software.

Types of Software:

Introduction to Software and Types of Software

The software used by the computer may be classified into the following categories:

1. Application software

2. Utility or service software

3. System Softwares

Application software:

These are the programs employed by the user to perform some specific functions. This software is required to make the computer useful for people. Application software has been written to do almost everything ranging from word processing to reserving a train seat.

The application software can be broadly classified into the following categories:

1. Word Processing software

2. Spreadsheets

3. Database management software

4. Graphics, multimedia, and presentation software.

5. Entertainment and education software

6. Communication software.

Service or utility Softwares:

The service or utility programs are those that are used to provide services to facilitate the working of the operating systems. The operating system has integrated many utilities into the system itself and some additional services that might help the user to take a backup of data, scanning viruses, maintenance tools for the system or retrieve the deleted files are called service software.

The service software is classified into the following categories:

1. File defragmentation.

2. Data compression.

3. Backup software.

4. Data recovery software.

5. Antiviruses utility.

6. Screen savers.

System Software

The system software consists of all programs, languages, and documentation supplied by the manufacturer along with the computer. They are also known as the system packages as they are a set of one or more programs designed to control the operation of a computer system.

These are general programs written to act as an interface between the hardware, application programs, and the user and facilitate the use of the computer system. They control all the operations, required to move data in and out of the computer and all the steps in executing an application program.

The System Software can be broadly classified into the following types:

1. Operating system.

2.  Translators.

This is all about software from my side. In my next post, I will give information about the operating systems and translators.
