You Asked: Why did the signs come down at a planned N. End retail & condo project

In 2017, BoiseDev told you about a plan for a new condo project with retail and a rooftop park – planned for the corner of 8th St and Fort St. near the Boise Co-Op.

The four-story Metropolitan project on the site of a former Baird’s Dry Cleaners never got off the ground – and now it will not happen at all.

Developer David Southers told BoiseDev he and his partners sold the property to the Roman Catholic Diocese. Southers said he could not comment on the church’s plans for the property. A church spokesperson did not reply to our request for comment.

Southers told BoiseDev he hoped to find another site to build a similar project on in the future.

Changes to cathedral campus

The Diocese operates the Saint John’s Cathedral about a block away. It also runs Saint Joseph’s School in between the church and the former condo site.

Separately, the Diocese applied to revamp the playground for St. John’s – the latest in a series of upgrades and changes to the St. John’s campus in recent years.

“There are small details speckled throughout that site that pay tribute to the surrounding block and existing materials at the School and Cathedral,” Melissa Drew with The Land Group wrote in an application letter. “A large brick cross located at the school entry will match the bricks used to… construct the School, while the St. Joseph’s Catholic School Logo is pulled directly in the middle of the cross. The brick cross allows members of the community to be involved with this project and have a forever memory of their contribution. The cross creates more identity for the School, the wrought iron security fence creates a relationship between the School and Cathedral.”

The church recently completed a multi-year project to revamp the stairs to the Cathedral site. Church leaders are also making changes to the building’s sanctuary.
