Blue Origin VS SpaceX: First Launch

On April 29, 2015, Blue Origin launched its first rocket named New Shepard. It went to 307,000 feet and flew flawlessly with one major hitch. The first launch was nearly 15 years ago.

SpaceX had its first launch only after 4 hours. The Falcon 1 was the first rocket to fly. However, the flight was a failure due to fuel leakage. After two more failed launches, the Falcon 1 was finally successful. This successful flight served as a proof of concept of SpaceX’s flight capabilities, and Falcon 1 was quickly retired in favor of the company’s true workhorse, the Falcon 9.

Blue Origin VS SpaceX: First Crew Flight

The crew flight of Blue Origin took place on July 2021. It successfully made the first crew flight.

July of 2021. The New Shepard spacecraft took off from the company’s launch site in Texas shortly after 9:00 in the morning. The crew of four included Jeff Bezos himself and Wally Funk, who set the record for the oldest person to venture into space at the age of 82. Funk was one of 13 women who trained alongside Mercury astronauts during NASA’s earliest programs.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule has proven successful at delivering trained astronauts to the International Space Station and was also designed for commercial flights open to civilians. The first of those flights took place on September 15, 2021, when the Inspiration4 crew lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center.

SpaceX Over The Course Of Time

  • 2008 — The Falcon 1 rocket became the first of its type to reach orbit.
  • 2010 — SpaceX became the first private company to launch, operate and recover a spacecraft with its Dragon craft.
  • 2012 — Dragon became the first spacecraft launched by a private company to make it to the International Space Station (ISS).
  • 2020 — Starlink, a project to deliver satellite broadband worldwide, became the largest satellite constellation ever.
  • 2020 — The Crew Dragon spacecraft sent NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken to the ISS, representing the first crewed launch from the United States since 2011.

 Reusable Rockets

SpaceX and Blue Origin had been in a race to be the first to recover a rocket for reuse. While SpaceX gets all the press for their reusable Dragon 9 rockets, it was Blue Origin who crossed that threshold first, as The Atlantic noted. In less than a month later, on December 21, 2015, the company successfully recovered the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket.

Blue Origin took a long time to recover from the loss of its propulsion module during the first test flight. In fact, before 2015 was out, they successfully ran another test in which the rocket launched and landed intact back on the ground (via EO Portal). This historic milestone was achieved on November 23, 2015.
